Episode 15: Boys Get Ready for School

In this short podcast, we talk to the kids for as long as we could (**8 minutes!) about getting ready to start school next week.

SPEAKER_01

Hello and welcome to another episode of As the Dinosons Turn. We have all four of us with us.

SPEAKER_00

Except that we can't all fit in the video, or one of us has decided to be a butthead teenager.

SPEAKER_01

Well, for the moment, all four of us are here on microphone. We have what ninety seconds, I think is what they said they would give us.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, one of them said they would give us 90 seconds, and then after that we'll go from there. Welcome to being a parent. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Alright, so this is as we're recording this, it's the first week of September, and school here in Portugal starts around September 12th or thereabouts, between the 12th and the 15th. So summer is starting to wind down.

SPEAKER_00

Right, and we we are now at the point where it's all getting ready to start. We've got to go back to school shopping and get ready for all of the last minute things. Get used to um a new schedule and getting up early and all of those things. So I think we've got to figure out back to school shopping stuff. Alright, so um, what are some of the things that you um what were your highlights for this summer?

SPEAKER_03

So I I guess that my main highlights of the summer were going to go see Barbie and then also just playing a bunch of games and also my birthday.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so I mean that's always those are always good things, right? And then Jack, what about your highlights? You have to lean in here.

SPEAKER_02

Um, I definitely say that I've gotten much more sleep than I have before.

SPEAKER_00

Sleep's important, right? And then um, what were some of the good things that you feel like besides sleep that you're like, yes, this was a good summer?

SPEAKER_02

Um I spent time with the dogs and made sure that they were okay.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and then what about going back to school? What are you looking forward to?

SPEAKER_02

Um, I'm not really sure yet.

SPEAKER_00

Do you think you'll understand more um since we did Portuguese classes this summer?

SPEAKER_02

I I think I will understand a bit more.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and I think having a full year will be nice, right?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, having a full year will be nice.

SPEAKER_00

Um, we gotta do some back-to-school shopping. What are some of the things that you need that you think?

SPEAKER_02

Pens. I need more pens because I don't have any pens.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, alright. And then what about clothes-wise? What are some things you think you might need?

SPEAKER_02

More pants.

SPEAKER_00

Your jeans guy, right?

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_00

Jeans seem to be what everybody wears.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I get that. Alright. Um, what are your goals for this year?

SPEAKER_02

Um, to to definitely get to the end and pass all of my classes and pass the finals.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that feels like a lot of pressure in ninth grade, right?

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. But at the same time, I think that you're more than capable.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um, and you would have passed them all of your classes in your last quarter if they were allowed to give you grades.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So I think that you're gonna do great.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and what's the activity you guys are gonna sign up for now?

SPEAKER_02

Music.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, music. Yeah, you're gonna do choir, right?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, choir.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. What do you miss about your choir in Indianola?

SPEAKER_02

Um, it it felt more like a family rather than a group. Everybody knew each other pretty well.

SPEAKER_00

Well, and you had a stellar teacher, right? Who was your s who was your teacher?

SPEAKER_02

Um Finn.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, Mr. Finn was your teacher, right? So we'll have to shout out to Mr. Finn for making choir awesome. So you're excited to get started with that again, right?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and what about you, Ty? What are you excited about for choir?

SPEAKER_03

Um, I'm excited to be able to sing songs again for choir.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, because school's very different here, right?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So you guys have art, but you don't have music, right? No, I don't.

SPEAKER_03

I have music, but it's not really like the music classes back in Indianola. Okay, so what what's music like at sixth grade? Well, we are still learning about like music notes and stuff, just like the classes. However, um Fridays we play xylophone. Oh, so that's your instrument, huh? Xylophone.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And you're hoping we're gonna see if we can find a good trombone for you, huh? Yeah. Because you'd like to do classes like that again, lessons, huh? Yeah. I think that's the thing that we miss the most is the music content and probably theater opportunity, right? So I know they've talked about doing like a theater club or something like that, but there is a theater troupe in town that's gonna get started with their some with their September things, and I know that Jack misses that. Now, what about theater and music do you love?

SPEAKER_02

Um, again, I think it's being a part of a big group and getting to know more people better.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and so that's our goal for this year, right? Being more part of community. And since we know more language, we can do this. Yeah. I think everybody's gonna be impressed.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So we've got back to school meetings to start with and all of that stuff. They'll have to go to meetings with me, and there's paperwork and stuff to sign, and we're just waiting to see what the schedule will be, if it'll be the same or if it'll be different.

SPEAKER_03

Uh there's also a fly on there's also like a fool high on the phone screen right now. So he's distracting. Yeah, if there's like if you see anything on screen events, probably a fool high.

SPEAKER_00

Alright. So, theater, full year, gonna pass all of our classes. Um, Jervagias, going to Jervajas again for math support, I think will be good. And then you'll get to do that a whole year.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

That way, because some of this math, Jack, you had said you hadn't done since like seventh grade.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I haven't used it. I haven't touched a compass since the fourth grade, third.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and you've got to get used to a compass and all those things too, right? Yeah. Right. So there's some tools that they gotta be really good at that you haven't done, huh?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

All right. Well, we uh I think we've reached our minute and a half with Jackson, who will you poke your head in and say hi? There you go. Okay. He exists. Perfect. All right, is there anything you want to add, Ty? Let's talk about you. Like, what are you looking forward to? You've got a pretty cool teacher group, right? Yeah. What are you looking forward to for this year? What are your goals? Well, I don't know. I think the big thing with Tyler and and with Jack, a lot of it, they know a lot of the material already, so. Yeah. I think you just gotta do history. That's your big thing, right?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, Portuguese history is a bit complicated. Yeah, we'll see how it goes.

SPEAKER_01

And join us again next time on another episode of As the Dinoson's Turn.
